This is at the intersection of Independence and Columbus in Virginia Beach. I know it is a little blurry---but you can still see a pair of sneakers in the crosswalk. My mind wanders into a thousand places on this one...did this person spontaneously combust? Did they just decide being barefoot was more fun? Did they fall out of their sneakers and just decide to keep going? Did I miss the Rapture? Was someone just driving down the road and decide...hmm, I just don't need these any more? I mean seriously people, I have never randomly lost a shoe in public.
This is the beginning of a catalog I should have started years ago...from now on when able I will photograph these random shoes!

Actually I've heard gangs use shoes hanging from things to mark their territory ( but what would I know about that I'm just from Durham). I am not sure about the crosswalk situation though.
I have heard that too--when they are hanging from a powerline in front of a house it indicates a location where you may purchase drugs. Which in itself is alarming.
I am more baffled by the random shoe here and there I see at random on sidewalks and roadways. I can't think of a time when I just lost a single shoe or even a pair of shoes in public. Now my closet...that is a completely different story =)
